Pakistan must act against terrorists, Modi to tell Obama
NEW DELHI, June 7, 2016, DHNS:
India will convey to the United States that it can no longer walk the extra mile to mend ties with Pakistan, unless the neighbouring country sincerely fights terror.
Terrorism will prominently figure in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Barack Obama in Washington on Tuesday. Modi is likely to once again underscore India’s concerns over terrorism emanating from territories of Pakistan or illegally occupied by it, officials in New Delhi told DH.
The prime minister commenced his two-day visit to US on Monday. He will meet the US president at the White House on Tuesday.
He will also convey to the US president India’s disappointment over Pakistan’s dilly-dallying with the trial of the plotters of the November 26-28, 2008 terror-strikes in Mumbai as well as the delay in acting against the masterminds of attack on the Indian Air Force base at Pathankot in Punjab in the first week of January this year.
Just days before the prime minister’s visit to Washington, the US argued in favour of “sustained and resilient dialogue process” between India and Pakistan.
The US also nudged India and Pakistan to “act with maximum restraint” and “work collaboratively towards reducing tension”.
New Delhi expects Obama to speak on the same line and prod Modi to continue with the process towards resumption of the stalled bilateral dialogue.
Modi, according to the sources in New Delhi, would convey to the US president that he had personally taken several initiatives to reach out to Pakistan and restart the bilateral dialogue that remained suspended since January 2013.
Modi visited the ancestral residence of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on December 25, just a couple of weeks after New Delhi agreed to restart its dialogue with Islamabad.
His visit was intended to generate goodwill between the two nations and create a conducive atmosphere for bilateral engagement.
