Another death at DJB site
A 33-year-old man fell to his death into an open sewer well at an unguarded Delhi Jal Board construction site at Outer Delhi’s Rohini on Tuesday night.
Police said that proper safety measures had not been put in place around the 30-feet-deep borewell in Sector 5 of Rohini, a claim contested by the DJB.
The incident took place around 8 p.m., soon after the victim, Sandeep Yadav, was captured on a CCTV camera as walking towards the well, dressed only in his lower undergarment.
Locals recalled how a splash caused by the fall drew their attention towards the borewell. Yadav, a resident of Vijay Vihar, suffered a severe head injury due to the accident. Passers by informed the PCR and the fire department about the incident after which the man was pulled out and rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Mohammad Uber, a shopkeeper who had assisted the firemen in pulling out the body said that the DJB had put up barricades around the well but it guarded only three sides of the well, while one of the sides towards a footpath was open. Mr. Uber added that a security guard was employed to keep people away from the site for sometime but he too had gone on leave for Diwali.
The CCTV footages recovered from the other parts of the road shows the man walking from towards Buddh Vihar. On the way he seemed to ask someone for direction and walked ahead. Police said that Yadav worked as an auto-rickshaw driver in the area. Police are also verifying if he was inebriated.
Locals also said that the mouth of the well was only partially covered with a net and given that small children have access to the site, it could have been anyone.
According to the police, an inquest proceeding has been initiated and a case of negligence will be registered if the next of kin of Yadav lodge a formal complaint. Police sources said that DJB had been reminded by local police to bolster security measures, but the suggestions went unheeded.
A senior DJB official said, “This was no accident as all precautions were taken from our side. There was barricading from all sides,” said the official.
Another DJB official said the pit had been dug for carrying out trench-less technology work, for which it had to be quite deep. But, the official added that the site had been cordoned off adequately.
