While resentment is brewing in every ward of Cuttack Municipal Commission (CMC) over faulty identification of people for ration cards, the civic body commissioner on Tuesday lodged an FIR with the local police over the vandalism created by corporators during the CMC council meeting last Saturday.
“In view of the damages made to public properties and injuries caused to some officials during the meeting, I have reported the same to police at Purighat police station,” said CMC commissioner Gyana Das.
The complainant, however, has not mentioned anything about the nature of injuries, cost of the damage or who caused them in his report.
On the other hand, city DCP Sanjiv Arora said that the police would investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress corporators have criticised the CMC commissioner’s action saying the police complaint is nothing but eyewash to divert the attention from the important issue. “When thousands of slum dwellers are excluded and many well-to-do people owning allegiance to the ruling party are included in the list of ration cards, the CMC commissioner’s police complaint over Saturday’s vandalism is nothing but a drama,” alleged Giribala Behera. The city has a population of nearly six lakhs and as per the norms for the district, about 70 per cent of it were supposed to get the ration cards. But only 1.30 lakh people had applied for it and the government has now identified only 65,000 people of which many are alleged to be ineligible for it.
