The infighting in the Congress descended into a personal slugfest on Tuesday with Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president E.V.K.S. Elangovan challenging former Union Minister K.V. Thangkabalu for a debate on “honesty and character.”
The challenge came a day after Mr. Thangkabalu said the TNCC needed a “civilised” and “straightforward” president and sought Mr. Elangovan’s removal.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Elangovan said that since Mr. Thangkabalu had raised questions on his personal integrity, he has been forced to reply.
The TNCC chief said entire Tamil Nadu knew the economic wealth of his family. Ever since he entered politics, the wealth has only reduced. But, this was not the case with Mr. Thangkabalu, he charged. According to him, Mr. Thangkabalu’s was an unexplained ‘rags to riches’ story.
On the delegation of senior leaders, including former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, complaining to Sonia Gandhi about him, Mr. Elangovan said he was not too worried as Congress cadres were working tirelessly with him to strengthen the party.
“If Ms. Sonia Gandhi wants me to resign, I will. I have never taken positions and power seriously,” Mr. Elangovan said, adding he had always maintained that decisions on alliances would be taken by the party high command.
When contacted, Mr. Thangkabalu said that he would provide an exhaustive reply to the allegations made by Mr. Elangovan once he returned to Chennai from New Delhi on Wednesday.
