Hosts register innings and 64-run win
A great team effort is one of the hallmarks of a champion side. After the dull proceedings on day three, where bad weather snatched away major portions of cricketing action, hosts Karnataka had to come up with a special effort to produce a result in their favour against Odisha in their Group ‘A’ Ranji Trophy encounter.
On the fourth and final day here at the SDNRW Stadium, responding brilliantly to the daunting task at their hands, the defending champions exhibited splendid team work to post a thumping innings and 64 runs victory on Tuesday. With this. Karnataka registered their second straight win, which helped them to move up to the second spot on table with 21 points to their credit, behind leaders Delhi (24).
Resuming from 0/1, Odisha, trailing Karnataka by 168 runs, had no answer to the dominant bowling performance from the hosts and folded cheaply for 104 runs, just over a session. Stuart Binny (4/34) rattled the visitors with some excellent medium pace bowling. Shreyas Gopal (3/43) was amongst wickets too, troubling the Odisha batsmen with his leg-spinners.
Courtesy their innings victory, Karnataka received seven points, including a bonus a point and will now face Delhi in their next game at Hubballi from November 23.
Apart from being shaken by the resilience of the Karnataka players, Odisha will also have to look for explanations for their shoddy batting performance. With heavy overnight rain forcing a delay of three hours and thirty minutes, the visitors needed some discipline from their batsmen. However, wild swings, unnecessary singles and too many risky options from their batters resulted in a tame capitulation.
Earlier, Binny, who sparkled with the ball in Karnataka’s victory against Rajasthan last week, produced a match-winning effort. After skipper Vinay Kumar removed the dangerous Govinda Poddar, Binny castled Natraj Behra for 19. The 31-year-old bagged two in two balls, when he sent back Ranjit Singh leg-before wicket to reduce Odisha for 41 for four.
After ten overs of tense action, Binny again produced a double blow to dismiss Pratik Das and Biplab Samataray in two consecutive balls. The important scalp of Das was bagged with a help of a brilliant diving catch behind the stumps by wicketkeeper CM Gautam which further lifted the team’s spirits.
Anurag Sarangi’s 44-run knock consumed 107 minutes to worry Karnataka slightly but once the left-hander departed, Shreyas cleaned up the tail in quick time.
Skipper Vinay called the victory a morale boosting one and said that the team is upbeat about winning more matches. “Our confidence level has gone up with this convincing win. We are on a high after winning back to back games,” he said.
The medium pacer added that despite weather posting a threat, the team tried to keep it simple. “I told the boys that we will give our best and the weather change is not in our hand. If not this match, I told them we can still win the next two matches and reach the quarterfinals. We like to keep things simple.”
