M. Mahalakshmi, seeded 32nd, continued her great run in the World Under-18 girls’ chess championship, extending her lead over fellow-Indian V. Varshini, to a full point at the end of the eighth round in Halkidiki, Greece. With just three rounds remaining, the Chennai girl had seven points.
An Indian was at the top in the Under-14 championship too, with top-seeded R. Vaishali on seven points.
But, in the Under-16 championship, the best-placed Indian was at the 20th position — Harshita Guddanti (five points), two points behind the sole leader Oliwia Kiolbasa of Poland.
Saina Salonika (6.5) though was placed third in the Under-12 event, just-half-a-point behind the leader Nurgyul Salimova of Bulgaria.
Rakshita Ravi was in the ninth position and third seed Divya Deshmukh 10th, both on 5.5 points, in the under-10 championship, 1.5 points behind the leaders Diana Lomaia of Georgia and Song Yuxin of China.
B. Savitha Shri maintained her sole lead in the Under-8 championship, with seven points.
In the boys’ Under-18 championship, Aradhya Garg was in the 12th place with 5.5 points, two behind the leader Masoud Mosadeghpour of Iran. Vaibhav Suri, the top-seeded Indian, was placed 14th, with 5.5 points.
Al Muthiah (six) was placed 11th Under-16 event, one point behind the leader Adham Fawzy of Egypt.
In the Under-14, Raja Harshit (5.5) was in the 17th place, 1.5 points adrift of the leader Andrey Esipenko of Russia.
In the Under-12 championship Nihal Sarin was in the fourth place with 6.5 points, half-a-point behind Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan.
R. Praggnanandaa (6.5) was in the second place in the under-10 event, trailing the leaders, Justin Wang of the United States and Oskar Oglaza of Poland. H. Bharath Subramaniyam maintained his sole lead in the Under-8 event, with 7.5 points. Dev Shah (six) was in the ninth slot.
