The Delhi Development Authority’s meeting on Thursday took an ugly turn when Aam Aadmi Party MLA Somnath Bharti and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb JungTRADED
barbs over the land allotment issue. While Mr. Bharti alleged that the L-G had threatened him with an FIR, Mr. Jung’s office dismissed the allegations.
The AAP leader alleged that during the meeting he asked for details of land allotted to the Bharatiya Janata Party for its office, to which Mr. Jung replied: “I will file an FIR against you if you don’t remain quiet.” The land in question was earlier reserved for schools and hospitals.
However, the L-G office dismissed the allegations and refused to comment.
Also present in the meeting was BJP Delhi unit president Satish Upadhyay, who said it was Mr. Bharti who provoked the L-G.
“Mr. Bharti kept saying ‘I will not remain quiet’ and was behaving like a ‘mad man’. The L-G told him that it wasn’t an Assembly meeting but an official meeting and that the proposal was cleared in the last meeting. It wasn’t the L-G who told him that an FIR will be filed against him, but the officials attending the meeting discussed the action to be taken against him. One of the officials suggested that an FIR be registered against him.”
BJP leader and former Mayor Rajni Abbi, who was also present during the meeting, said it was Mr. Bharti who dared the L-G to file an FIR against him.
“He kept saying ‘I will not stop and you [Mr. Jung] can file an FIR against me’. The L-G asked him to stick to the proposals listed in the agenda.”
While Mr. Bharti left the meeting midway, it continued and later took place in the Vice-Chairman’s office. The meeting was attended by officials from various civic agencies and three MLAs nominated by the Delhi government, two councillors nominated by the civic bodies and one nominated member from the Urban Development Ministry. Ms Abbi said Mr. Bharti wasn’t present during the last DDA meeting, held in September end. She added that AAP MLA S.K. Bagga didn’t raise objections to the land allotment proposal, which was cleared in the meeting.
“Mr. Bharti was probably in jail that time and the other AAP MLA didn’t object to it. Moreover, the proposal is in the public domain and anyone can file a complaint.”
Mr. Bharti said he wanted to re-discuss the land allotment issue, adding that “Mr. Jung was trying to suppress it.”
