Having played its second home game in a partially-lit stadium, questions are now being raised on the reasons that led to the power failure ahead of Delhi Dynamos’ Indian Super League match against NorthEast United FC at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.
The match had to be played under back-up lights after the electric substation that powers the stadium reportedly caught fire and burnt the transformer. Sports Authority of India sources, however, are now alleging that the fiasco happened after an unauthorised person fiddled with the transformer, despite being instructed not to, which led to the fire.
Also, the load on the transformer was doubled due to another event being organised within the stadium premises simultaneously. The power failure also forced authorities to delay opening the stadium gates for the general public due to security and safety concerns.
“Power supply and electric substation are our responsibility and no one else is authorised to go there but some people do not accept it,” stadium administrator Uma Dutta said without taking any names.
Fiddled with transformer
SAI officials said initial enquiries suggest that someone had fiddled with the transformer without any knowledge of its working that led to a complete breakdown before power being restored.

The incident forced both teams to undergo their pre-match routines in front of empty stands under darkness as the public was allowed in only after partial supply was restored.
The match began more than half hour behind schedule.
