Two golds for Grewal

Achal Pratap Grewal won the individual and team gold in junior men’s standard pistol in the 13th Asian shooting championship in Kuwait City on Sunday. He had Rituraj Singh and Shivam Shukla for company on the podium.

In the men’s section, Mahendra Singh won the silver, nine points behind Jang Dae Kyu of Korea. With Neeraj Kumar shooting a below par 537, after Gurpreet Singh had placed fifth with 567, the Indian team was pushed to the bronze behind Korea and China.

Lajja Gauswami made the women’s 50-metre rifle 3-position final, but was placed seventh. The Indian team, with Anjum Moudgil and Elizabeth Susan Koshy as the other members, had confirmed the bronze on Saturday, after the elimination round.

The Indian contingent took its tally to 16 gold, nine silver and 10 bronze medals.

Meanwhile, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) made another announcement, reiterating that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had revoked the Olympic quota places of the Asian championship.

This was necessitated as the Kuwait Shooting Federation made an elaborate list of 21 Olympic quota winners, including three Indians Pooja Ghatkar, Heena Sidhu and Lajja Gauswami, from the ongoing championship, in its website.

“The ISSF already has four formal applications and will announce the location and dates for the Asian Olympic shooting qualification competition as soon as ISSF Executive Committee and IOC approvals are obtained,” said a statement from the ISSF.
