Chennaiites want water to be drained faster

IT has been an uphill task for rescue teams from the defence forces, NDRF and coastal security force to flush out water from the still flooded Chennai.

Water on its own is receding slowly and the sheer volume of stagnated water is harder to flush out.

“Water is receding slowly, especially in heavily flooded areas like Mudichur and Tambaram near south Chennai,” said an NDRF official, warning that the stagnant water could become contaminated very soon.

“Water refuses to recede even in north Chennai,” the official said, expressing hope that his team would fight against time to drain water from the heavily flooded areas.
State government officials also chipped in with the draining efforts, sensing the growing impatience among residents concerned for the safety of their houses.

"The de-watering in my area that started two days ago was not effective as only few inches of water receded until now, despite the rescue team using several pumps", S Manikandan living in flood-hit Mudichur area in south Chennai said.

Old buildings
Those in north Chennai were more concerned as buildings in their areas were built several decades ago and could weaken much faster than the upscale apartments dominating the landscape in the city’s southern neighbourhoods.

"Our house will collapse if water levels do not recede rapidly,” K Munnusamy, a resident from Washermenpet in North Chennai said.

New apartment buildings can withstand water for longer time since they have stronger foundations and are plastered from both inside and out, K Venkatesh, a real-estate owner said.

He said most houses in south Chennai, especially in Tambaram and Mudichur, are recently built.
