Congress and Trinamool Congress MPs on Thursday staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha, protesting primarily against the remark made on party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and chief whip Jyotiraditya Scindia by BJP member Virendra Singh a day earlier.

The protesting MPs sought an apology from Singh, an MP from Uttar Pradesh. The problem began the moment the Lower House met for the day. Congress’s leader in the House, Mallikarjun Kharge rose to protest against Singh’s comment. Soon, some Congress MPs also trooped into Well of the House and shouted slogans against the NDA government.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan told the House that she had already got the objectionable remark expunged from the record of the proceedings. But Kharge insisted that the BJP leader should apologise for his remark or the Speaker should take action against him, finding support from the TMC’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said while he was not condoning the remark of Singh, the way Congress MPs were repeatedly coming to the Well of the House was also condemnable and should not be repeated.

“How can you call the prime minister of India, the darling of the Indian masses, a “Hitler”? How do you call him a “Hitler”,” Naidu said. He lambasted the Congress MPs for stalling the Lok Sabha.
Mahajan, who adjourned the House till 11.40 am, also noted that some of the protesting MPs hurled papers towards the podium of the Speaker on Wednesday. When the House reassembled, the Congress MPs continued to raise slogans from the Well of the House, demanding the sanctity of the Lok Sabha should be maintained.

The Question Hour continued amid the din.Kharge raised the issue once again after the Question Hour and led the Congress MPs in a walkout, protesting not only the remark by Singh, but also against growing “intolerance”  and the government’s “politics of vendetta”.
