Eight achievers chosen for Sandesha Awards 2016

Awards carry cash prize of Rs 10,000, citation; to be given on Jan 16
As many as eight persons will be conferred with the prestigious ‘Sandesha Awards’ for the year 2016, for their achievements in various fields.
The Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education will confer the awards on January 16 at Sandesha premises in Bajjodi, Mangaluru.
The award winners are Dr H S Venkatesha Murthy (Kannada literature), Gladys Rego (Konkani literature), Devdas Kapikad (Tulu literature), Sugantha Sathiaraj (Teaching), Ustad Rafique Khan (Art), Alexander Joel Pereira (Konkani music) and Thomas D’Souza (Media) and G S Jayadeva (special award).
Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, Sandesha awards jury president Na D’Souza said that this is the 25th year of the Sandesha awards. The award ceremony will be attended by Home Minister Dr G Parameshwar, local legislator J R Lobo and Archbishop Rev Bernard Moras. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and citation.
The awardees were selected by a jury comprising of Dr Na D’Souza, Richard Louis, Dr Na Da Shetty, Eric Ozario, Chandrakala Nandavar and Sara Abubakkar.
Award winners
Dr H S Venkatesha Murthy (Sandesha Literature Award) began his career as a lecturer in Kannada at St Joesph College of Commerce, Bengaluru, in 1973.
Besides being an exemplary teacher, Dr Murthy is a great orator. His contribution to literature includes more than 75 writings of varied kinds. He has to his credit collections of poems like Kriyaparva, Onamarada Giligalu, Amerikadalli Billahabba, Uttarayana, Saugandhika, plays like Hejjegalym Uriya Uyyale, Agniparva, Manthare, and children’s literature like Alilu Ramayana, Chinnarimutta, Hakki Salu, Hoovina Shale.
Symproza Philomena Gladys Rego (Sandesha Konkani Literature Award), was born in Bendur in Mangaluru and is known popularly in Konkani literary circle as Gladys Rego. She has brought out four volumes of short stories in Konkani, six works on folklore, two collections of stories. She has to her credit 27 books which include short stories, folk literature, biography and research.
Devdas Kapikad (Sandesha Tulu Literature Award) has dedicated his life to Tulu theatre and movies. Having set up a drama troupe called ‘Cha Parka’, he has written and staged around 50 plays. His play Pudar Ditiji has broken all records in Tulu drama.
Sugantha Sathiaraj (Best Teacher Award) has dedicated her entire life for the uplift of the people in Ballari district. She spent 17 years of her life as a teacher in English and Social Studies at St Philomena’s High School, Ballari. She was instrumental in providing education to more than 1,000 dropouts in Ballari. She has been working tirelessly for the empowerment of women by providing them unconventional education and though various income-generating and employment schemes.
Alexander Joel Pereira (Sandesha Konkani Music Award) has marked an unforgettable imprint on Konkani music in Mangaluru. He is versatile in playing on a wide variety of musical instruments like the keyboard, guitar, mandolin, accordion and sitar. An accomplished music composer and arranger, he has organised music for over 350 albums. He has arranged voices for more than 1500 hymns and 120 songs.
Thomas D’Souza (Sandesha Media Award) has served the movie world as an owner of a cinema theatre, as a member, honorary secretary and vice president of the steering committee of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed the president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce for 2014-15 and has toiled for the all-round development of the Kannada film world.
G S Jayadeva (Sandesha Special Award) had started Deenabandhu Trust after his voluntary retirement as lecturer in 2001. The trust adopts children from the government schools and provides for their food, cloth and shelter. He has rendered his services in Shaktidhama, a women rehabilitation centre in Mysuru, Vivekananda Tribal Welfare Centre, BR Hills.
