Fresh rain hampers TN rescue operations

Fresh spell of sporadic heavy rain on Saturday hampered rescue operations in rain-hit Tamil Nadu with the Air Force suspending its helicopter rescue operations.
The weathermen have predicted more downpour in the next two days due to a stagnant low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
The downpour, which started on Friday night, added to the worries of the citizens of the rain-battered city and its neighbouring districts who have ben struggling hard in the wake of the unprecedented nature’s fury.
Airport sources said only a few choppers were in action since Saturday afternoon for the rescue operations.
Besides the Air Force, the Army, Navy and the National Disaster Response Force are in the middle of a massive round-the-clock rescue and relief operation in the rain affected areas of Tamil Nadu, with several aircraft and helicopters and 5,000 troops in action.
NDRF Director General O P Singh, who has been monitoring the rescue operation of his team, said so far 16,000 people have been evacuated and were given first aid.
He also claimed that for the first time in NDRF history, more than 1,500 trained personnel were deployed at a time to carry out relief operations in Chennai and its neighbouring rain-hit districts.
With the Met department predicting more rains, the rescue teams are also gearing up in case of an eventuality.
Met officials told Deccan Herald that Friday’s low pressure area over south west bay and adjoining Sri Lanka off Tamil Nadu Coast now lies over Sri Lanka and adjoining Comorin area off South Tamil Nadu Coast. He said the system is likely to move towards west in due course.
