A huge blaze involving thousands of litres of oil broke out at a Tata Steel plant in the UK today but there were no reports of any injuries.

The fire at the Aldwarke Lane plant in Rotherham, in the South Yorkshire region of England, was contained by this morning.

A Tata Steel spokesperson said the fire had broken out as part of the steel making process.

"The men are well trained in reacting to these situations and the response was very good and people were safe," he said.

"The fire is now contained and the emergency services are leaving the site and we are assessing the damage and the clean-up operations that need to occur," the spokesperson said.

People living in the area were advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to the amount of smoke in the area.

South Yorkshire Fire said the blaze broke out about 01:00 AM (local time) but has now been contained.

The service said the site had been evacuated and there were no reports of any injuries.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway, South Yorkshire Fire said.
At the height of the blaze, 10 engines were reported at the scene.
