Bijay Kumar Panda, the Sub-Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) of Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district of Odisha, was nabbed by vigilance officials on Tuesday while he was accepting bribe from a woman in his office chamber in Bhanjanagar sub-divisional government hospital.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) of Berhampur vigilance division, Manoranjan Panda, the doctor had earlier accepted Rs.1,000 from complainant Ahalya Nayak and had demanded Rs.3,000 more to discharge her husband Sashi Nayak from the Bhanjanagar hospital. Mr Sashi had been admitted in the hospital on October 19 due to peptic perforation. On that day, the SDMO had demanded and accepted Rs.1,000 from Ms Ahalya for the operation. On November 1, Dr Bijay conducted the surgery but demanded Rs.3,000 more to discharge Sashi from the hospital.
Following a complaint by Ms Ahalya, the vigilance sleuths laid a trap on Tuesday afternoon. The erring doctor was rounded up when he accepted the Rs.3,000 worth marked currency notes. The marked money as well as relevant documents were seized from possession of Dr Bijay.
After getting nabbed by vigilance officials, the doctor complained of chest pain. He was immediately shifted to the cardiology department of MKCG medical college and hospital in Berhampur. According to vigilance officials, he would be arrested when he gets discharged from the hospital.
