South Delhi parking lots to have handicap spots
: Municipal parking lots in South Delhi will soon have preferential slots for the differently-abled, with three per cent of the capacity in each facility being reserved for persons with disabilities.
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), which has 78 parking lots, is in the process of demarcating the slots for differently-abled users. Around 12,00 vehicles can be parked in the 78 sites.
“We have started marking the spots and putting up the boards informing people of the reserved parking. The work will be completed by the end of this week,” said SDMC spokesperson Mukesh Yadav on Wednesday.
The spots are being outlined in paint and will feature signboards saying they are reserved for persons with disabilities. The work started at the beginning of this month, half the sites in the West Zone have been completed.
The Delhi Airport has preferential parking for the differently-abled, but activists say the position of the spots is far from ideal.
“It’s a welcome step if the SDMC is giving preferential parking, but there should be a strong enforcement,” said Javed Abidi, a disability rights’ activist.
Mr. Abidi said after civil society intervention there was a slot reserved for persons with disabilities at the parking facility of a multiplex in South Delhi. “But, every time I would go there a senior police official’s car would be parked there,” said Mr. Abidi.
He added that the location of the preferential parking spots at the airport facility means there is a “considerable distance” from the entry or exit. “The closest slots to the entry points are reserved for VIPs,” said Mr. Abidi.
