Despite a fresh stab wound right next to his chest, 22-year-old Rohit ignored a police team’s advice to rush for medical help.
Son of a Delhi Police sub-inspector, Rohit knew that he could be helpful for the police as he would be able to identify the robbers.
“At the time Rohit met the police team, he was bleeding heavily from the wound in his chest. Head constable Wazir Singh and constable Rohitash insisted that he accompany them to a hospital, but he was adamant on first helping them trace the robbers,” said Vijay Singh, DCP (North-West).
The policemen gave in to his demands and asked him to get into their gypsy to resume the search.
They were soon joined in their pursuit by sub-inspector Sandeep Kumar and head constable Subhash Chand as they headed out in the direction of Ring Road where the robbers were learnt to have fled.
Within minutes, Rohit identified the suspects from inside the police gypsy. “From a distance he recognised his bag they had robbed. We jumped off our gypsy and chased the robbers on foot. Rohit too joined us,” said one of the policemen.
Finding themselves surrounded from all sides, the suspects jumped off the Azadpur Flyover to a road 15 feet below. A bleeding Rohit also jumped the height and the four policemen followed suit, thus negating the advantage the robbers had gained.
The suspects, who included a 16-year-old boy, were subsequently neutralised and nabbed.
While one police team led the robbers away, another took Rohit to a nearby private hospital.
“But the hospital refused to treat the victim saying he was bleeding profusely. The policemen took him to another private hospital, which only examined him before asking them to take him to a bigger hospital,” said a senior officer.
Rohit was finally admitted to Sushruta Trauma Centre. Police said his condition is stable, but quoted doctors as saying that an inch or two of variation in the stabbing spot could have proved to be dangerous.
The entire chase involving Rohit took less than 10 minutes.
Rohit works for a private firm and lives with his family in Ashok Vihar’s Police Colony.
“His father Jai Bhagwan is a sub-inspector deployed in Tis Hazari area,” said a police officer.
He was returning home on a motorcycle when he had to slow down at a turn.
The robbers used that opportunity to stop him and strike a conversation in the midst of which they robbed him. He tried his best to fight them, but was stabbed in his chest.
That had given the robbers an opportunity to flee. They had already robbed four others and stabbed one in the one-and-a-half hours before targeting Rohit.
Meanwhile, interrogation of the nabbed suspects has revealed that the juvenile was roped in for the robberies by his older accomplice Arun, who has five previous robbery cases registered against him.
“Arun told the boy that even if he was caught, he could escape within just a few days in a remand home,” said an investigator, adding that Arun himself turned 18 less than a week ago.
