Legislators fear backlash from public if crisis is not resolved
BBMP officials on Thursday faced the ire of ministers and the MLAs from the City for their ‘inefficiency’ in garbage disposal during a meeting on solid waste management held at the Vidhana Soudha.
Chaired by Bengaluru Development Minister K J George, the four-hour-long meeting saw the participation of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, Information Minister Roshan Baig and MLAs from ruling and opposition parties.
The MLAs expressed their displeasure over the way garbage disposal had been handled in the City.
The MLAs said they are at the receiving end of the electorate due to poor garbage disposal. They feared serious backlash from the public if the problem was not solved now.
In the meeting, there were complaints against the inability of many contractors to carry out their work properly while others recommended stringent action against the officials.
The MLAs favoured setting up of more scientific garbage processing units to clear waste. Some MLAs suggested that the State government should purchase 500 acres to 1,000 acres of land outside Bengaluru to dump waste.
After giving a patient hearing to the MLAs, Minister George assured them that he would consider their suggestions and complaints seriously and would work with them to bail out the City from the garbage woes.
He briefed them about the various measures taken by the government, including setting up seven garbage processing units, to rid the City of filth.
