The December 16 gang rape victim’s parents were detained by the Delhi Police when they held a protest outside the observation home housing the juvenile convict in North Delhi’s Majnu Ka Tila on Saturday.

They were among 200 protesters detained and released after 45 minutes. The victim’s parents were with students from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Delhi University Students’ Union and Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union.

Earlier in the day, they had also protested at Jantar Mantar to demand that the juvenile should not be released.

The youngest convict in the case will be set free on Sunday. “The parents of Jyoti had also addressed the protesting youth,” said ABVP Delhi State Secretary Saket Bahuguna.

Protests
At 5 pm, the protesters, along with the victim’s parents, gathered outside the government-run special home for boys, Place of Safety, in Majnu Ka Tila.

“They were shouting slogans demanding that the Central government take immediate measures to stop the release of the juvenile. They blocked the roads,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma. It is alleged that police used force on the protesters.  They were taken in buses to the operational cell office at Maurice Nagar police station. “We were released after 45 minutes,” the victim’s father told Deccan Herald.

In a series of tweets, the matter was condemned by Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal and Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal.  “This is too much. Why has police detained Nirbhaya' parents. They have all right to peacefully protest. They should be immediately released,” Maliwal tweeted.

The protesters also demanded amendments to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act to include children in the age group 16 to 18 in the category of adults if they commit heinous crimes.
