Cop killed in Delhi courtroom firing
New Delhi: Dec 24, 2015, DHNS
A Delhi Police head constable was killed and three others injured when four assailants opened fire inside a courtroom at the Karkardooma Court Complex in East Delhi on Wednesday.
Metropolitan Magistrate Sunil Gupta also had a close shave as one of the bullets scraped past his chair and hit a wall. The deceased has been identified as head constable Ram Kanwar Meena, who sustained five gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital. He was posted with the 3rd Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police.
Delhi government has announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for his family. “Head constable Ram had gone to the court while escorting undertrial prisoner Chanu Pehelwan alias Irfan, a criminal from North East Delhi’s Seelampur, for a court hearing,” said DCP (East) B S Gurjar.
Irfan had been in judicial custody and was to give a statement in the Metropolitan Magistrate’s courtroom number 73. As soon as the constable entered the court with Irfan, the four assailants opened fire. The incident occurred at 11:15 am while the proceeding was in progress. “Those present in the courtroom, including the judge, had to run for cover as the assailants fired indiscriminately,” Irfan’s lawyer Shaqib Quereshi told Deccan Herald.
The four attackers were overpowered by lawyers, litigants and police personnel present on the premises. Two pistols were also recovered. The injured constable has been identified as the ‘naib’ of the courtroom. According to police, over ten rounds were fired.
The investigating officers suspect it to be a case of rivalry between two gangs. The prime target was Irfan, who has issues with a gang headed by a criminal named Nasir. The attackers are suspected to be contract killers hired by Nasir’s gang.
A case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered with Farsh Bazar police station. The police is also investigating as to how the assailants managed to get inside the court with arms dodging layers of security.
After the incident, judges and other judicial officers held a meeting with senior police officers to discuss security arrangement. Shahdara Bar Association President Advocate Mahesh Sharma said there was inadequate security due to the small number of policemen deployed.
