BBMP's GIS to help ensure transparency in civic works
The new year is all set to bring about a major change in the functioning of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as the Geographical Information System (GIS)-based road history will become a reality.
The public works carried out by the BBMP in the last three to four years will be up for public scrutiny once the GIS-based road history will be put up on the public domain from the first week of January. The portal is already functional, but the details of a majority of works are missing. Once fully operational, it will provide details of the works carried out by the BBMP on each road in the City within the Palike limits.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, the BBMP Special Commissioner (Projects), Dr J Ravishankar, said that it will take a maximum of 15 days to put up the GIS-based road history in the public domain for everyone to see.
He said, “We are at a stage of vetting all the information. There are certain duplications of the location as some BDA areas, which came under the BBMP limits, have been uploaded twice, which we are erasing. Similarly, there could be works which have been put up more than once. This will take at least a week's time to complete the work. One more week we may require to fully equip the system for public scrutiny.”
The road history will also help in identifying the properties in Bengaluru. Further, it will also help the BWSSB, BDA, Bescom and other civic agencies to check any duplication of works and bogus bill generation. In the coming days, the number of trees growing beside a particular road can also be uploaded which will be helpful in conducting the tree census.
