'Court proceedings led to Hema's killing'

MUMBAI: Dec 24, 2015, DHNS
Chintan planned to lure ex-wife and get her killed
Hema Upadhyay
A day after the arrest of contemporary sculptor-painter Chintan Upadhyay on charges of the sensational doublemurder of his estranged wife Hema Hirani nee Upadhyay and her lawyer Harish Bhambani, it has now emerged that he got her eliminated as she was piling up cases against him.

Chintan and Hema, both 43, had met in 1992 and got married in 1998, but separated in 2010 and the divorce came through in 2014 from a family court, but there were disputes over alimony and maintenance of flat, and these were being fought in the Bombay High Court.

The original plan was to lure Hema into a trap and get her killed, but she preferred to go along with her lawyer and he, too, got eliminated.

“We have grilled him for more than a week, for several hours and at the same time, collected technical evidence, confronted him with those and finally arrested him,” police sources said adding that Chintan was perturbed because of the piling up of the cases.

The sources said that efforts are now underway to track down Vidyadhar Rajbhar, a metal fabricator, who is known to the couple. “Call records show that both of them were in touch with each other,” they said, adding that Vidyadhar owed some money to Chintan and perhaps agreed to do the job in exchange of a waiver.

In fact, he has asked one of his employees to call Hema to hand over some evidence against Chintan that would help her – and she fell into the trap and also took the lawyer along.
