Changes were in the offing after India lost to South Africa at home in both ODIs and T20Is. Keeping the upcoming WorldT20 in mind, the national selectors made a host of changes, even falling back on seniors Yuvraj Singh and Ashish Nehra for the T20Is in Australia.

The selectors also announced Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the limited overs captain till the World Twenty20 to be  staged in India in March-April next year.

Yuvraj, who is currently the third highest run-getter with 341 runs at an average of 85.25 in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, is returning to the international fold since the 2014 World T20 final. “Yuvraj is special, he will always remain special,” Chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil said on Saturday.

Nehra's last international game was in 2011, a T20 international against South Africa in Durban. “Nehra has been a consistent performer in the Twenty20 format. We feel he will be useful in this format and this was the time to try him out. Nehra has been discussed in previous meetings also,” Patil said.

“We have given many youngsters the chances but this game is also about experience.”
Also making a comeback was Mohammad Shami as he was picked in both ODI and T20I squads. Shami was sidelined with a knee injury after the World Cup. Ravindra Jadeja was also selected in both squads while Ishant Sharma made it to one-day squad.

Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey, too, earned a recall to the ODIs while Suresh Raina was dropped from the ODI side and accommodated in the Twenty20.

The surprise pick was left-arm Punjab seamer Brainder Sran, 23, and Baroda all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Sran has been picked for the ODIs and Pandya for the Twenty20 squad on the strength of their performance in the domestic circuit.

Sran picked 14 wickets in six matches for Punjab in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy to speed up his maiden India call-up. In the Ranji Trophy, this season, Sran got 18 wickets from his seven games at 35.66.

Pandya shone during his stint with the Mumbai Indians that also includes Harbhajan Singh. The veteran off-spinner lost his spot in the ODI but has found a place in T20 line-up.

Those who couldn’t find a place in any of the squads were Ambati Rayudu, Stuart Binny and Amit Mishra.

After a lengthy meeting Patil made it clear that they viewed Australian tour as an opportunity to try out the extended pool before the World Cup. He, however, insisted that those dropped have “not been written off.”

“We felt that in batting and bowling, the team was looking very predictable that is why we have picked fresh faces,” he said.

On announcing Dhoni captain till the World T20, Patil said: “The selectors wanted to send a very clear cut message to the media and all the players and I am not speaking about India team players but general players, that who will be their leader.

The tour comprises five ODIs and three T20 Internationals to be played between January 12 and 31.
