Fire at Chamundi Hill damages vegetation
Mysuru, Apr 18, 2016, DHNS
A fire broke out on Chamundi Hills on Sunday and damaged around 10 acres of vegetation. Fire fighters managed to douse the fire after a three-hour struggle.
The fire broke out at 1.30 pm in the forest near Hukkeri road. A passerby noticed the thick smoke and alerted the Fire Brigade and Forest department. Five fire fighting vehicles – two each from Saraswathipuram and Hebbal fire stations and one from Bannimantap fire station – were pressed into service. Each vehicle carrying 16,000 litres of water could not reach the spot due to the terrain. Using water guns and brooms made of tree branches, forest personnel and locals put out the fire at 5 pm.
Deputy Conservator of Forests Karikalan confirmed that 10 acres of forest have been damaged and a few birds might have also died. Owing to strong wind atop the hill, it was difficult to control the fire at the initial stages. He said some miscreants might have lit the fire intentionally.
