Leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday questioned the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding Haryana government’s law mandating minimum education qualification for contesting the panchayat polls.

“Is it the right of the Supreme Court to take away the rights of the common man? Is it right to snatch the basic principle of democracy seeking refuge under the Supreme Court ruling?,” he said.

Attacking the BJP for setting this trend in Rajasthan and Haryana, he said that this move was “anti constitutional,” and would dent the basic principle of democracy - universal adult franchise.

Addressing the media here on Thursday, Kharge said that there was no level-playing ground, as 50 per cent of the women in the country were illiterate.

Kharge added that he would discuss the issue with the party leaders and challenge the same.

Appealing to members of all local authorities to vote Congress to power in the MLC elections, he said, these elections assumed significance as it would give the party a majority in the Upper House.
