Opposition attacks Telangana CM over lavish ritual
HYDERABAD, Dec 24, 2015, DHNS
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has come under attack from the Opposition for holding the ‘Ayutha Chandi Maha Yagam’ to seek divine blessings for the prosperity of the new state.
The five-day event began on Wednesday at the CM’s sprawling farmhouse near Yerravelli village in Medak district, about 60 kilometres from here.
The Yagam, which involves 1,500 priests from seven states chanting 700 Vedic hymns non-stop 10,000 times, is being described as the biggest Yagam ever organised by any state.
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan also took part in the rituals on the inaugural day. Several dignitaries, including President Pranab Mukherjee, are set to attend the event, the estimated cost of which is over Rs 6 crore.
The Opposition has launched a scathing attack on the government saying the “religious extravaganza” is being held at the tax-payers’ cost when Telangana is facing serious agrarian crisis, including farmers’ suicides. The mega religious ritual is estimated to cost over Rs 6 crore.
Disapproving of the “exorbitant splurge of money and misuse of government machinery for a personal event”, the Opposition BJP said it supported performing yajnas for the larger public good.
