Speaker expunges own remarks
NEW DELHI, Dec 24, 2015, DHNS
In a rare gesture, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Wednesday expunged her own “vested interest” remark made a day before against protesting Opposition members after the Congress raised concern on her observation made in the House.
“I did not take name of (any) party... I will definitely expunge the vested interest remark... I am sorry,” she said after Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge raised concern on her observation.
Kharge told the House that the Speaker’s comment were “unfortunate”, “not proper” and “it hurt them”. He blamed the government for logjam since he argued that “we are bringing up issues in national interest” whether it was about Minister for State for External Affairs V K Singh or Arunachal Pradesh.
Before showing graciousness, Speaker Mahajan stated that “they (Congress members) are hurt for some reason. It would be good if they also think that for their actions some others might have also been hurt”. On Tuesday, the Speaker had stated that “Unka koi national interest nahi hai. House bund karne ka vested interest jaroor hai (They do not have any national interest. They do have only vested interest in stalling the proceedings of the House)”.
This was seen as a rebuke to Congress members who were protesting in the Well during question hour. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Baijayant Jay Panda, who had stood up from his seat to ask a question on country’s coastal security, was miffed and appealed to the slogan-shouting members of the Congress in the well to pay attention to his question in the national interest.
