Mamata distances TMC from tainted leaders

In an apparent attempt to distance herself and her party from the Saradha and Rose Valley scams, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that when someone steals money, the fault should be that of the individual and not his or her party.
With a number of Trinamool Congress leaders embroiled in scams involving the two tainted groups, the ruling party in West Bengal would need a face-saving exercise before the 2016 Assembly elections.
“If somebody has stolen money, then he is the accused, not his party,” Mamata said. Her statement gave rise to speculations that she is trying to maintain distance from party leaders like Madan Mitra, who have been named in relation to the scams.
While Mitra was arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in the Saradha scam, many leaders, including Textile Minister Shyamapada Mukherjee, were questioned by investigating agencies.
The CBI had earlier arrested Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP and businessman Srinjoy Basu besides questioning two other party MPs– Tapas Pal and Mithun Chakraborty. Basu, who was released on bail earlier this year, has since resigned from the Upper House and quit politics. Pal, the Trinamool Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar, has been questioned several times for his role in the two scams.
Chakraborty, a popular actor and a Rajya Sabha MP, has returned around Rs 1.3 crore he received as remuneration for being the brand ambassador of Saradha Group.
