After 18 years in prison, Chetia out on bail
Guwahati, Dec 25, 2015, DHNS
Ulfa founder general secretary Anup Chetia alias Golap Barua, who was deported to India last month from Bangladesh, was released from Guwahati Central Jail on Thursday afternoon after he got bail in all the four TADA cases.
Chetia categorically said he will join the ongoing tripartite Ulfa peace process and try to find a “honourable” solution. He also sought “forgiveness” from the people of Assam for “past mistakes” committed by the group.
His release has paved way for his joining and perhaps leading the pro-talk faction of the group in the ongoing peace process.
Earlier, the pro-talk faction of Ulfa had made it clear that it would not take the talks further unless Chetia was released. The next round of talks with the Centre is due in early January next year.
“The court granted the bail on conditions that Chetia cannot hamper the process of investigation and he cannot leave the jurisdiction of the special judicial magistrate without prior permission,” his advocate Bijon Mahajan told reporters in Guwahati.
The moment was emotive for Chetia, who had languished in a Bangladeshi jail since 1997. He was released from the Guwahati Central Jail, just hours after he was granted bail in the last of the four cases registered against him.
Both Centre and Assam government did not oppose his bails. “I have been briefed about the current situation of the Ulfa peace process. It is in a very advanced stage.
I would certainly join the process. I have spent half of my life on foreign soil and in jail, fighting for the cause with which Ulfa was born. Now that I am out of jail, I will try to find an honourable solution. The peace talk is going in the right direction from whatever I have gathered,” Chetia told reporters outside the Jail.
