Lucknow: Dec 24, 2015, DHNS
17 accused, including minor, have been arrested
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday filed a charge sheet against 15 people for lynching a Muslim man at Bisada village in Dadri following rumours of eating beef.
According to police sources, the charge sheet stated that 52-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was killed by a mob after rumours spread that he had kept beef at his home. Incidentally in its report to the Centre following the killing, the UP government did not mention any reference to the rumours about beef.
Of the 19 accused, 17 had already been arrested while two of them are absconding. One of the accused is a minor.
Those arrested included the son of a local BJP leader Sanjay Rana, whose supporters allegedly instigated the mob. The mob had forced the priest of a local temple to give a call over a loudspeaker to the residents to gather near Akhlaq’s house.
Akhlaq was lynched by a frenzied mob on September 28 this year. Akhlaq’s son Danish suffered serious injuries in the attack. Incidentally, it was found that the meat at Akhlaq’s house was not beef, but mutton.
The killing had triggered a nationwide outrage and the state government had come under attacks from different quarters for its failure to safeguard the lives of minorities.
The state government had provided a cash assistance of Rs 50 lakh to the family in addition to four flats after they expressed their desire to leave the village and settle elsewhere.
