Salman Khan's fate to be decided next week
MUMBAI: Dec 5, 2015, dhns
The Bombay High Court will dictate next week its order on actor Salman Khan’s appeal against the five-year jail term imposed on him in the 2002 drunken-driving and hit-and-run case.
One person was killed while four others were injured in the incident. Justice A R Joshi, who has presided over the appeal, has posted the matter for Monday for dictation of the judgment.
The dictation of the final verdict is expected to continue for a couple of days.
On Friday, defence lawyer Amit Desai and government pleader and chief public prosecutor Sandeep Shinde and public prosecutor Poornima Kantharia concluded the final arguments.
The arguments in the case continued for nearly three months, excepting the Diwali break.
On May 6, Additional Sessions Judge D W Deshpande convicted Khan and awarded him a five-year jail term. The judge held him guilty on the grave charge of Section 304 Part 2 of the IPC, which stands for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The same day, the actor moved the Bombay High Court, where Justice Abhay Thipsay granted him interim bail and on May 8, his plea was admitted. Later the case was assigned to Justice Joshi, who incidentally retires this month.
During the course of hearing, Shinde had contended that the actor had consumed alcohol on September 27, 2002, at Rain Bar and Restaurant at Vile Parle and was driving his Toyota Land Cruiser Lexus vehicle in the early hours of September 28 when the accident took place at Bandra West.
