Tasked with looking after her younger brother in the absence of her parents, a 12-year-old girl cooked up an entire kidnapping story after she lost sight of the boy. Though her story did not convince the senior police officers, they immediately registered a FIR and began a probe.
The incident took place in Outer Delhi’s Samaypur Badli on Tuesday evening while the children’s parents were away at work. “As soon as the parents left home, the siblings began playing. The girl lost sight of her brother sometime later because of which she panicked. She launched search in the locality but could not trace him upon which she called the PCR number,” Vikramjit Singh, DCP (Outer), said on Thursday. When the police arrived, she described how four men on motorcycles had carried away her brother. “When asked about the motorcycles’ registration numbers, she said the number plates were covered. Overall, her story was not convincing, but we did not want to take any chance because we realised something was wrong and that the boy could be in trouble,” the DCP told The Hindu .
Three different police teams were immediately constituted to search for the boy. He was found two hours later at a park, not very far from his home. “When we asked the boy who had kidnapped him, he said he had wandered away from home while playing,” said Mr. Singh. Police then questioned the girl who broke down and confessed that she had made up the entire story as she was afraid that her parents would beat her upon knowing she had failed to safeguard her brother.
