Coaches returning to roles they have played before isn’t new. But in an interesting development, former Indian women’s hockey team chief coach Neil Hawgood will be back with the team but in the diminished role of an assistant coach from next month.
In an official communique on Thursday, Hockey India confirmed the appointment, though without specifying Hawgood’s actual designation and only stating that he would “join the coaching team of the Indian women’s team” in its preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“As of now, he will be one of the coaches. As to what designation he gets will be decided later. But he has been asked to join the team starting November,” a Hockey India official said.
