Geelani plans ‘Million March’ during Modi’s visit

Syed Ali Geelani

Separatist Hurriyat, headed by Syed Ali Geelani, on Thursday called for ‘Million March’ on November 7, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi is arriving in Kashmir valley, and the venue would just metres away from where the PM is scheduled to speak.
Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar said his party is approaching the state administration for a formal permission for the rally.
“The ‘Million March’ at the Tourist Reception Centre ground in Srinagar on the day of planned public rally of Modi will see more than a million people marching. It will be a clear referendum. This is to underline that Kashmir dispute is not about terrorism but rights and broken promises of New Delhi,” Mr. Akbar said.
Mr. Geelani has called upon other faction of separatists to join the march.
Mr. Akbar said the rally would be peaceful. “We will take the responsibility of the proposed march and its discipline in our hands. The event will not create any law and order problem and nor will it disturb the traffic system,” said Akbar.
“People desirous to participate in Mr. Modi’s rally will not be stopped or hindered. Both the public rallies will decide that how many people are with India and how much support the freedom struggle has,” he added.
Mr. Geelani's rally comes at a time when the government and the PDP is preparing in a big way to make the Modi’s rally a success.
The Prime Minister is likely to speak at Sher-I-Kashmir park, just stones throw away from Geelani's proposed venue.
