NAGESHWARAM FROM SOUTHERN INDIA

One of the double reed instruments is the southern Indian Nageshwaram. Contrary to its northern Indian counterpart, the Shahnai, it has a length of 70-80 cm. It is traditionally played at open-air temple festivals. Because of its piercing sustained sound, it is often used together with the powerful drum Thavil. It became known in the west through the saxophone player Charlie Mariano who studied the traditional technique of this instrument in southern India and has played it in many of his concerts in the west.
